A Few Words About Google Advertising

Often our sites offer Google Advertising to users. These ads are chosen by Google based on the content of our web pages and advertisers can specify to place their Google ads on our site. Google controls the algorithm that selects the ads. In the past, these ads where chosen based on ad targeted keywords matching words within the page content. The assumption being that ads with the same target keywords would be of interest to the reader.

Google, in an effort to improve the user experience, chose to alter this algorithm. Google will not only supply ads based on target keywords, but also based on the interests of the person reading the page. Google states, "Interest-based advertising will allow advertisers to show ads based on a user's previous interactions with them, such as visits to advertiser website and also to reach users based on their interests (e.g. "sports enthusiast"). To develop interest categories, we [Google] will recognize the types of web pages users visit throughout the Google content network. As an example, if they visit a number of sports pages, we will add them to the "sports enthusiast" interest category."
